Conference on Independent Living and Awards Reception

On June 2nd and 3rd, 2009 the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging (WRAAA) hosted the Conference on Independent Living and Awards Reception.

The WRAAA is deeply committed to assisting older adults to preserve their wellness, independence and dignity through a wide array of supportive service programs and a comprehensive network of service providers. The ever-increasing population of older adults, the increasing demand for supportive services by those who are frail and / or disabled, and the challenging economic times are placing increased demands on those programs and our network. As the WRAAA strives to be an effective advocate for older adults, program administrator, and leader of our local aging network, we recognize the importance of collaboration between the various groups that promote and support independent living. To help facilitate collaboration and to strengthen and motivate these stakeholder groups, WRAAA instituted the independent living awards reception and companion conference. The these events offer opportunities for stakeholder education, networking and recognition.

One of WRAAA’s responsibilities is to help communities to plan and develop environments that foster independent living and choice. The creation of elder-friendly environments generally requires strong input and cooperation from individuals and organizations from six different community sectors: education, research and training, health care, long-term care, local government, technological innovation and business, and advocacy. It is the collective work of these six sectors that make independent living for the older adult a possibility. WRAAA is privileged to work with such a wonderful network of individuals and organizations committed to the principles of independent living.
